Thirteen

lessons in conversing

i never know who is Supposed to look away first
and, so, i take it upon myself to
find&place
my gaze
on any object
other
than
your face

hardwood sky kitchentabletop sidewalk
anywhere; my mind trickles down
quietly, harmlessly,
and so i let it continue

i'm won won wondering
whatyou'rethinking
whereyou'relooking
will you speak first?

the eternal Color Conundrum:
is my red your purple?
your blue my green?
i don't know these answers and
gray hairs are sprouting from these
thoughts, so dryold stale&musty

perhaps our thoughts could grow and/or rot together?
there would be strength in unity,
strength in our masses, the scale tipping towards the
                          right

but this would require some
speaking, lips and eyes.
some direct gazing.

we have much to learn, dear,
of the art of conversing.

  1. This is just so honest a peek at people, their inner needs to communicate and yet to protect themselves. Really skillfully created here!

  2. thank you, susan. i feel like there is always so much to be said about the gaps in human communication, the connections that are left hanging...

  3. That's generally the place that I write my poems from as well. So much of my life has been defined by the space between moments, where we make ourselves believe that we were powerless to say anything.

    Simply lovely, your work.

In the meantime, if you'd like to, take a look at my interactive poetry website: nehabawa.com/spacebetween. I'd love your feedback.
