Fifty-Two

Compassion I

we joke about eating mindfully as we spill our tongues
over buttered garlic naan, teeth melting through soft white paneer cubes

mindfully, i am not joking
when i look into your eyes, pure as the mountains
just washed with the rains,
blue shades sloping in angular beauty,

i taste the words your mouth churns out like dewdrops or
crystal clear gems crashing in this magnificent silence

mindfully, i smile deep and love your face and
the beating of your heart next to mine
in this sea of heartbeats in which we sometimes swim
